19 Years Later

Today we’re worried about Hurricane Irene, and the potential threat that’s facing the United States. Irene is the first Hurricane of the season, and already has done some damage. These storms are notorious for being unpredictable, trust me I know. I’ve been tracking these storms since I was just a child. My advice to people on the east coast is to take heed and do all you can to prepare for the storm, and not to take anything too lightly.

With Irene on people’s minds, today is also the anniversary of another storm that hit my home state of Florida 19 years ago. Hurricane Andrew made landfall in Florida on August 24, 1992, at around 0840 UTC (3:40 AM EDT). The storm was thought to have been a Category 4, but was later upped to a Category 5. Andrews’s winds were powerful and devastating. Major areas of South Florida were damaged beyond belief, recovery would take years.

Hurricane Andrew was the first major storm I had ever been through, and I still remember the experience. I was only six years old, and about to start the first grade. At the time Andrew was just another thunderstorm to me, I had no idea what they were, or what they could do. Needless to say, I’m glad I went through it.
